Scuba Diving

Many people are put off from scuba diving because they feel that they are not strong enough swimmers. But you do not need to be an especially excellent swimmer to begin scuba diving. You really just need to feel comfortable in the water. When you get your scuba certificate, you will have to demonstrate basic proficiency in the water. This will be an easy 200-yard swim in any stroke you feel the most comfortable with and a ten-minute tread or float on the water. This is well within the ability of most competent swimmers.

Learning scuba diving and becoming certified is easier than you may think. The training process is divided up into three sections. The first is knowledge development, the theoretical aspect of the process. This teaches you how and why the scuba equipment works. You will read from the Open Water Diver manual and watch an instructional DVD. The length of the academic study is roughly 8 hours. It is possible to do a large portion of the study at home and at your own pace.

The next portion of the certification process will take place in an indoor heated pool. This is practical training for you to get used to your scuba equipment in a controlled environment. This part of the process is performance based so you may not need to complete the total allotted amount.

The final part of the certification process is scuba diving in the ocean with your instructor. This will give you the chance to put all your new knowledge and skill to use. You will have to complete four dives with your instructor. This is the most fun part of the process and also the most useful. There is no better way to learn to scuba than by actually doing it. Once you have completed all three parts of your training, you will be qualified and ready to go scuba diving.
