Free diving is the technique of diving without the mechanical breathing apparatus. Many free divers love the feeling of freedom that comes with the sport and feel that going any deeper into the water unnecessary because the majority of marine life resides in the first 30 feet of the ocean.
Free diving requires relaxation, confidence and new breathing and energy conservation techniques. It is important to work with an instructor who will introduce you to the sport in a step-by-step way building your confidence as you go.
One of the major techniques of free diving is the "relaxed fetal position." This technique will act as the basis for your free diving: both psychologically and physically. It involves breathing on the surface of the water, curling into the fetal position and completely relaxing. When you are completely comfortable with this position, you will find it very calming and some divers even come close to sleep.
The goal of free diving is to work with the water and not against it. Once you learn the basic dives, you will be able to submerge with very little effort. Your first fifteen-second dive will rapidly become thirty seconds and then forty-five. Forty-five seconds is enough to submerge to a depth of thirty feet.
