Diving Computer

A diving computer is a way to keep track of your dive time and depth. It will also calculate the nitrogen levels in your body tissue, telling you the time and depth limits to stay within. This is going to help you reduce the risk of decompression sickness.

You need to make sure that your diving computer is easy to read. Choose a display that you understand completely and makes sense to you. A low battery warning is also very important. The diving computer will need to be active for 24 hours or longer to calculate the changes in your dissolved nitrogen. If it runs out of battery, you will not be safely able to dive for the next 24 hours because your absorbed nitrogen levels will no longer be calculated. For this same reason, the diving computer should not be shared with other divers.

There are two basic styles of diving computer. One can be independent of your scuba gear and worn on your wrist as you would a diving watch. The second style of diving computer is integrated with the submersible pressure gauge. By being integrated with the pressure gauge, some computers are also able to tell you how much air you have left, based on your depth and breathing speed.
